Topics to discuss before saying

On Behalf of | Sep 29, 2017 | Divorce

If you are getting ready to take a walk down the aisle in New York,, there are a couple of important topics you should discuss with your future spouse before saying “I do.” These topics are very important because they could crop up again down the road if you were to file for divorce.

How will you handle finances as a married couple? Will both people work? One of the most common reasons for divorce is money. Is one person a spender and the other a saver? This can be a difficult combination to blend once you are married. Discussing the finances for marriage prior to saying “I do” is very important.

Are you planning on having children? Many people just assume that they will have kids once they get married only to find out their spouse never wanted children. This is another big cause of divorces in New York. Discuss your thoughts on children prior to getting married. You don’t have to discuss how many kids you want to have, just the fact that you want to have children.

The dynamics of your new extended family should also be discussed prior to the wedding. You will now have to spend holidays with two families, not just your own. Will both families gather somewhere for the holidays? Will you split time or trade off holidays? What about in-laws popping in for visits? These are all important questions to answer before you exchange your vows.

You need to find out ahead of time how religion will play in your marriage. Are you religious? Do you expect your spouse to attend church with you? Or, are you comfortable practicing alone? How will religion come into play if you have children?
