2 signals of an impending divorce

On Behalf of | Dec 20, 2018 | Divorce

There are countless reasons why spouses choose to end their marriages. However, regardless of “why,” the months and years that precede divorce may have two things in common for the vast majority of couples: a lack of intimacy and an increased focus on activities that fall outside the scope of the relationship.

Let’s take a look at both these symptoms of an impending divorce a little closer:

A lack of intimacy

According to relationship psychologists, physical intimacy is a way for couples to reinforce their closeness and connection. Clearly, physical intimacy and displays of physical affection are not a requirement for all spouses — and many spouses are perfectly happy without such contact. However, when one spouse wants this intimacy and the other spouse will not provide it, it could be a sign that the relationship is coming to an end. The spouse who refuses contact may not be interested in the relationship any longer, or the spouse who requires it may choose to seek this intimacy in a new partner.

More focus outside of the marriage

As spouses begin to move apart from each other, they will often start putting more attention outside the marriage, into other friendships and into other activities that they enjoy separately from their spouses. When relationships and emotional satisfaction are found outside the marriage completely, there’s a higher chance of an extramarital affair or simply an increased chance of divorce.
